The 2017 Quidditch Canada Western Regional Championship

    October 16th, 2017 by Corey A. Edwards

2017 Quidditch Canada Western Regional ChampionshipAbbotsford will once again play host to the Quidditch Canada Western Regional Championship, November 18th and 19th, 2017 at Mouat Fields. That’s right: Quidditch, as in Harry Potter, the award winning fantasy book series from J.K. Rowling.

Don’t feel bad if you didn’t know that Quidditch had been translated into a real sport, complete with broomsticks, blodgers, and golden snitches. The game (which is not associated with, licensed or sponsored by J.K. Rowling) is still growing – but growing it is. In fact, this is the second year in a row that sees Abbotsford hosting the Quidditch Canada Western Regional Championship.

Outside of the fantasy series, Quidditch is played on the ground, not whizzing about in the air aboard a broomstick. Don’t be too disappointed, though – the players are still required to “ride” broomsticks. Instead of sitting atop them, however, they are required to carry them about as if they were riding them.

Imagine running around a field, trying to get a ball through a hoop and avoid opponents, all the while pretending to ride a broomstick. It sounds more than a little crazy – but what it is is a real challenge!

Come On, Get Hoppy … At BC Hop Fest 2017!

    August 28th, 2017 by Corey A. Edwards

BC Hop Fest 2017October is BC Craft Beer Month and it all kicks off with BC Hop Fest! BC Hop Fest is more than 35 breweries, 4 food trucks, live music, and the new Hop Market! September 30th, 2017 1pm to 6pm in Abbotsford, BC.

BC Hop Fest is a unique annual celebration of British Columbia’s craft breweries and hop products. Craft brewing fans and hop lovers alike come together to eat, drink, and kick up their heels in a field of hops on the vine.

The main focus of BC Hop Fest is fresh hop beer. While traditional brewing uses dried hops, fresh or “wet” hopped beers use freshly harvested, green, whole cone hops whose oils and resins are still at their peak. You can taste this freshness in every sip of a properly balanced wet hopped beer. The style adds a spicy, lively, citrusy flavour that’s hard to do without once you’ve had it. The difference is almost like that between fresh or canned foods.

BC Hop Fest offers an afternoon of craft beer tasting, hop farm tours, local food trucks, and live music in the form of March Hare and Loud n Leaded. Numerous brew masters will also be on hand to discuss the brewing process.

This year’s BC Hop Fest also offers something new in the form of a “Hop Market” and presentations on a variety of uses for hops. Tickets for this annual event always go fast, so get yours now if you intend to attend!

Catch Air On the Water at the Abbotsford Wakeboarding Park!

    June 23rd, 2017 by Corey A. Edwards

Abbotsford Wakeboarding Park - Valley Wake ParkDid you know that there’s an Abbotsford wakeboarding park? Valley Wake Park offers cable-wakeboarding, SUP, and more in BC’s Fraser Valley!

There’s nothing quite like the thrill of wakeboarding. Speeding across open water on a warm summer day, hitting a kicker and pulling an ollie – now that’s living. At Valley Wake, the Abbotsford wakeboarding park, you don’t even need a boat! Valley Wake Park offers cable wakeboarding.

    Wait – what’s cable wakeboarding?

Traditional wakeboarding involves being pulled along behind a boat. This leaves you at the mercy of the boat with longer setups to practice your skills and usually a lot of swimming if you fall. Cable wakeboarding is cleaner, quieter, more efficient, and environmentally friendly when compared to the traditional method.

In cable wakeboarding, the tow line is connected to a cable running along a series of towers. An operator controls the speed of the cable, providing the speed you need to learn to wakeboard, to practice a specific stunt, and anything in between. Should you dump into the water, the cable operator simply brings the tow line back to you.

Land The Big One On a Fraser River Sturgeon Fishing Safari!

    June 16th, 2017 by Corey A. Edwards

Fraser River Sturgeon FishingWe’ve all heard about the big one that got away. Be the one who got away with the big one instead on a Fraser River sturgeon fishing safari!

British Colombia’s Fraser River has gained a reputation for being home to some of the largest, fightingest, freshwater sturgeon out there. Tales of epic battles between angler and fish are making their way through the sport fishing community like wildfire. I’m here to tell you that, not only are the stories true – you can come and see for yourself!

There’s no greater achievement for an angler than landing a fish that is bigger and stronger than you. Unfortunately, many fishers never get to experience such a challenge. There simply aren’t that many places left in North America where a person can count on hooking a decent sized fish.

Canada’s Fraser River, however, is one. Experienced local anglers and guides continue to pull massive specimen from the Fraser and report white sturgeon that exceed 4 meters (13 ft) in length and weigh more than 680 kg (1500lbs)! Is it any wonder that Fraser River sturgeon fishing is so popular?

The average sturgeon pulled from the Fraser River is between 1 and 2 meters in length (3 to 6 feet) and will put up a very good fight. Lay your hook into one of the really big ones, though, and look out! This is what Fraser River sturgeon fishing is all about: the challenge. Any angler worth their salt loves a challenge – and sturgeon are everything you could hope for in a big game sport fish. They are powerful fighters that often explode from the water time and again when hooked.

With the right guide or knowledge of the Fraser, they say, you have a 50% chance or better of hooking one of the truly big ones! Luckily for those visiting the area, there are numerous companies that specialize in Fraser River sturgeon fishing.

Get Out And About On An Abbotsford Winery Tour!

    May 26th, 2017 by Corey A. Edwards

Abbotsford Winery TourThe Fraser Valley is home to a wide range of unique flavors and experiences. When it comes to wines, our region produces traditional grape wines as well as fruit and honey wines. Discover them all on an Abbotsford winery tour!

Something special happens to wine lovers after they visit a vineyard or winery. Thereafter, every sip of wine has a new depth. The wine stops being just something taken from a store shelf and you’ll taste the effort and care that you now know goes into every bottle. Along with the grape, you’ll sense a hint of the good earth it grew from, the barrels it aged in, and the clean, strong hands that coaxed it into being.

Not all wineries have the time, staff, or facilities to allow for a tour but almost all offer a tasting room. Visiting a winery tasting room is the next best thing to taking a tour. Not only do you still get to soak up the vineyard ambiance but also a chance to sample and purchase wines. Maybe even a few varieties not available anywhere else!

Finally, vineyards and wineries are notoriously scenic. You’d be hard pressed to find many other production facilities that are as photogenic. It doesn’t hurt that the nature of their business often places them in gorgeous, rural valleys and farmland.

You don’t have to like wine to enjoy an Abbotsford winery tour, you just have to like having fun!

Visit Fort Langley, a National Historic Site

    September 12th, 2014 by sweetdreams

Fort LangleyFor a real taste of history we encourage visitors to head over to the Fort Langley National Historic Site.  Fort Langley, located less than a half hour from the inn,  is a former trading post of the Hudson’s Bay Company.  It is commonly referred to as “the birthplace of British Columbia” and is designated as a National Historic Site of Canada. Fort Langley is the exact location where, a century and a half ago the Hudson’s Bay Company established a small post to trade with the First Nations of the West Coast. The trading continued and the fort grew, leading to the creation of the colony of British Columbia.

Exploring this 1800s fur trade post is very exciting, and is like stepping back in time.  It’s truly amazing to see what it was like to be there in the 1800s. Visit with costumed interpreters, watch blacksmithing & barrel-making demonstrations explore.  See where First Nations people traded salmon, furs and Cranberries for Hudson’s Bay Company goods, and see where British Columbia was proclaimed a colony. Enjoy cultural exhibits, a gift shop, and enjoy lunch (summer months only) at the Full Barrel Café. For more information visit their website.

After a day of exploring life in the 1800s, step into modern luxury with stay at Sweet Dreams Luxury Inn, ideal Fort Langley lodging.
